Counting Change: A Birthday Tradition

Dressed in our bulkiest and warmest coats we loaded the car to head home to celebrate my birthday. We had just dropped our backpacks off, and were finally done with a week of class. I was so grateful to have a Friday birthday this year.

I share my birthday with a very special lady, my grandma. Every year we have a big birthday celebration, and I was so glad college didn’t keep us from being able to celebrate together this year.

Before we drove off into the countryside, we stopped along the busy downtown street to grab some cupcakes… Cappuccino, Peanut Butter cup, and a Raspberry Beret cupcake for my grandma.

I spent a good twenty minutes counting change in mostly dimes for our order and we happily headed off.

Spending change from my big major jar made me feel excited to be able to share a cupcake with my grandma and get myself a treat I’d been saving random change for all year.

I think next year I will do the same, this way every-time I drop a few nickels and dimes into the jar… I’ll dream of sharing cupcakes with my grandma as we celebrate our birthdays.

Do you keep a change jar or share a birthday with a friend or family member? How do you make either of these special?
